‘Terribly intelligent, horribly funny and wonderful’

| 26 November 2024
This month NTGent repeats two of its most successful performances from last season. Coming up this weekend: 'Persians. Triumph of Empathy'.

PERSIANS. TRIUMPH OF EMPATHY

Chokri Ben Chikha and Action Zoo Humain, artist in residence at NTGent, combines word, dance and music into a dazzling and moving whole. From an ancient Greek tragedy, a diverse cast of six performers, some from Israeli or Palestinian backgrounds, asks whether empathy is stills possible in a conflict that has been polarising for decades.

‘A deliberate punch in the stomach’, according to De Standaard (BE) ****, which proves that “theatre has the power to look the other person in the eye as a human being in the midst of chaos”.

Or as the theatre blog Pzazz puts it:

‘The result is wondrous. 'PERSIANS' puts  the whole debate and theatre itself on edge.’

Only humans can fantasise With closed eyes, you can see whomever you’d like There's all that future, still Until it holds from the inside Beyond madness, tenderness awaits
