La Reprise. Histoire(s) du théâtre I - Milo Rau
Fiction or reality. Which of the two is guiltier? In his latest work Milo Rau launches a new series in the form of a long-term performance-based investigation into the past, present and future of theatre, humanity’s oldest art form. In it the pioneering Swiss director tackles a fundamental issue: that of the representation of violence and traumatic events on stage. From the outset, theatre has been an incantation of the dead, a ritual experience of primitive crimes and collective traumas. What intrigues, intentions or coincidences lead to murder? What role does the audience play and what blame can be attributed to the collective? Together with the four actors Sara De Bosschere, Sébastien Foucault, Johan Leysen and Tom Adjibi, as well as the storage man Fabian Leenders and the dog-sitter Suzy Cocco, he follows the trail of a capital crime, searching for the essential fatalities and emotions of the tragic experience: loss and grief, lie and truth, disaster and fear, cruelty and terror. Six actors and amateurs contemplate about the glamour and abysses of life and theatre and slip into the roles of the protagonists of a brutal murder case: A manifesto for a democratic theatre of the real emerges. Based on a tragic event that occurred in Liège a few years ago, La Reprise - Histoire(s) du théâtre (I) stages the suffering of a city that, following its imperceptible economic decline in the post-industrial era, has gradually descended into violence and despair. Fiction or reality?
With this production, Milo Rau introduces the series “Histoire(s) du théâtre”, a long-term performative investigation into the oldest art form of human kind, which will be continued in the season 2018/19 by the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula.
