What does it mean to flee? What does it mean to have a home? Empire is the third and final part of Milo Rau’s Europe Trilogy.

Actors from Greece, Syria and Romania recount artistic and real tragedies. Akillas Karazissis played the great warrior and the tragic hero in the ancient theatre of Epidaurus. Maia Morgenstern became known as Maria in Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ. Ramo Ali spent several months in Assad’s prisons. Rami Khalaf fled to Paris with a forged passport, worked for the radio and searched photos of victims of the Syrian regime to find his missing brother. They talk about torture, fleeing, mourning, death and rebirth, a political and intimate portrait of our time.

So full of history and stories, so singing and silent that one gives in to defeat.
