A broken handbrake is a classic motif for nightmares: losing control, being unable to stop, heading for a disaster. On the other hand it can also mean: feeling free, rushing for-ward unchecked. However, is movement always a movement forwards?

In the 18'-19' season, Miet Warlop - in collaboration with author and curator Raimundas Malasauskas - presented the performance Ghost writer and the broken hand break. A mixture of whirling dance, recitation and concert. An experiment on the thin line between being in control and losing control. How can we find balance between self-control and devotion? Who are the spirits that write the stories of our lives?

"Astounding and exhiliarating"
The Guardian

Miet Warlop studied three-dimensional art at the KASK in Ghent and is one of the best-known Belgian artists in the field of performing and (installation) art. Her production Mystery Magnet, colourful and sombre at the same time, was an international success.

In Ghost Writer, she offers a modern and Western vision of the Sufi whirling we associate with the dervishes. Three performers rotated on stage for an hour. In Sufi ceremonies, this movement is performed to reach a state of religious ecstasy. Ghost Writer is an experiment of perception, a feeling of dizziness, but also a reflection on what the ghosts of our time really are.
