Hate Radio - Milo Rau

Play by Milo Rau about Rwandan station Radio Télevision Libre des Mille Collines. The station played an inflammatory role during the genocide in 1994, when roughly a million Tutsis and moderate Hutu were slaughtered.

When on 6 April 1994, the aircraft of Rwandan President Habyarumana was shot down by rockets, this was the start of a brutal genocide. In a matter of weeks the Central African state murdered an estimated 800,000 to 1 million of its Tutsi minority and thousands of moderate Hutus. The instruments used to do this were machetes, sticks and a few guns. The most powerful weapon, however, was Radio-Télévision Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM). With indescribable cynicism, this popular station had meticulously prepared the genocide for months.

Through a reconstruction of their recording studio, Milo Rau shows us the absolute hatred of these ‘word criminals’. Everything in the arena that Milo Rau has recreated is true: the words were actually spoken, the characters really existed and they all talk about their actions during the trials that eventually put them in prison. And we, the public, are in the middle of the bloody hysteria of these devilish manipulators. As a result, we fully realize the consequences of racism and we are called on to be vigilant.

What is brilliant about Hate Radio is that it treads the line between the absolutely normal and the utterly unthinkable. The combination of sound, action, verbatim text and intense, precise acting is unforgettable.
