War and Turpentine - Needcompany
Following the success of Isabella’s Room (2004) about Lauwers’ own family history, Lauwers now tackles the story of Hertmans’ family, in between art and war and in the midst of the Flemish struggle.
In his theatre production of Oorlog en Terpentijn (War and Turpentine), Lauwers stages a story that has managed to keep itself from disappearing into the cracks of history. It is the story of Urbain Joseph Emile Martien, forgotten war hero and painter and grandfather of Stefan Hertmans. To do so, Lauwers brings together a unique ensemble of performers, accompanied by Viviane De Muynck, to depict the beginning of the twentieth century, including the rise of industrialization, the violence of the ‘Great War’, love, happiness, sorrow and the secrets of a human life, all set to a new musical composition by Rombout Willems.
