“EEN THEATERGESCHIEDENIS IN HET KLEIN EN EEN EVEN WREDE ALS POËTISCHE LEVENSSCHOOL.”

Met Medea's Kinderen werpt Milo Rau een nieuwe, diepgaande blik op de rol van kinderen in het theater. Een echte strafzaak is het uitgangspunt: de zaak van een moeder die in totale wanhoop na een scheiding, besluit haar kinderen te doden en zichzelf van het leven te beroven - maar zij overleeft. Deze moderne tragedie is verweven met de klassieke tragedie Medea, het meest beruchte geval van relatieconflict en kindermoord in de westerse literatuur. Een groep kinderen grijpt deze bloedige misdaadzaak en het misschien wel donkerste oorsprongsverhaal van de Europese cultuur aan om over zichzelf na te denken: over familiegeschiedenis, eerste liefde en eerste ontmoetingen met de dood, over verlangens voor de toekomst en angsten voor het einde van de wereld dat ons allen achtervolgt. Hoe gaan kinderen om met de scheiding van hun ouders? Met onrecht, vriendschappen die stranden, de druk op school? Hoe gaan ze om met de radicale kracht van Medea - met tragedie in het algemeen? De kinderen, in de klassieke tragedies tot zwijgen veroordeeld, komen ditmaal eindelijk aan het woord. Medea's Kinderen: de absurde en met bloed doordrenkte tragedies van het volwassen leven gezien door de ogen van kinderen - een theatergeschiedenis in het klein en een even wrede als poëtische levensschool.

Over Milo Rau

Milo Rau, geboren in 1977 in Bern, is regisseur, schrijver, filmmaker en sinds het seizoen 2018/19 artistiek directeur van NTGent. Rau studeerde sociologie, Duitse en Romaanse talen en literatuur in Parijs, Berlijn en Zürich bij onder meer Pierre Bourdieu en Tzvetan Todorov. Critici noemen hem de “meest invloedrijke” (Die Zeit), “meest bekroonde” (Le Soir), “meest interessante” (De Standaard), “meest controversieel” (La Republica), “meest schandalig” (New York Times) of “meest ambitieus” (The Guardian). Sinds 2002 heeft hij meer dan 50 toneelstukken, films, boeken en acties gepubliceerd.

Rau's theaterproducties waren te zien op alle grote internationale festivals, waaronder het Berlin Theatertreffen, het Festival d'Avignon, de Biënnale van Venetië, de Wiener Festspiele en het Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts, en zijn op tournee geweest in meer dan 30 landen wereldwijd.

Rau ontving vele prijzen, waaronder de 3sat Prize 2017, de Saarbrücken Poetics Lectureship for Drama 2017 en, als jongste artiest na Frank Castorf en Pina Bausch, de gerenommeerde ITI-prijs van de Wereldtheaterdag in 2016. In 2017 werd Milo Rau uitgeroepen tot “Acting Director of the year” in een enquête van Deutsche Bühne, in 2018 ontving hij de Europese Theaterprijs voor zijn levenswerk en in 2019 werd hij als eerste artiest ooit “Associated Artist” van de “European Association oTheatre and- Performance - EASTAP”. In 2019 ontving hij een eredoctoraat van de Lund University (Malmö), in 2020 kreeg hij een eredoctoraat van de Universiteit Gent.

In 2020 ontving hij de gerenommeerde Münster Poetry Lectureship voor zijn complete artistieke oeuvre, zijn toneelstukken werden in enquêtes van critici in meer dan 10 landen uitgeroepen tot “Best of the Year”. De filmversie van Orestes in Mosul – gevolgd door een toespraak van Milo Rau – opende in september 2020 het Nederlands Theaterfestival en tegelijkertijd verscheen het boek “Why Theatre?”, waarin Rau 100 vooraanstaande intellectuelen en kunstenaars uit de hele wereld vraagt deze vraag te beantwoorden.

Rau's films (o.a. Die letzten Tage der Ceausescus, Hate Radio, Die Moskauer Prozesse, Das Kongo Tribunal, The New Gospel) zijn met vele prijzen bekroond (o.a. een Special Award op het Festival des Deutschen Films, de Zürcher Filmpreis of de Amnesty International Prize), zijn film Das Kongo Tribunal werd o.a. genomineerd voor de Duitse en Zwitserse Film Awards: “Milo Rau veredelt de cinema”, zei bijvoorbeeld de jury van de Zürcher Filmpreis. Zijn laatste film, The New Gospel, werd in Zwitserland uitgeroepen tot documentaire van het jaar.

Naast zijn werk als regisseur is Rau ook televisiecriticus, docent en een zeer productief schrijver met tot nu toe 15 publicaties, die onder meer in het Engels, Frans, Italiaans, Nederlands, Chinees en Noors zijn vertaald. Het literaire werk van Rau is bekroond met enkele van de meest prestigieuze Duitse literaire prijzen, waaronder de “Oscar van het radiodrama”, de “Prijs voor radiodrama van de Oorlogsblinden” (2014) en de twee meest prestigieuze Duitse literaire prijzen voor geëngageerde literatuur: de “Peter Weiss-prijs” (2017) en de “Gerty Spies Literatuurprijs” (2020). “Milo Rau is de gouden standaard van het post-drama”, schreef de krant “Der Tagesanzeiger” al in 2014. Rau's werk is een vast onderdeel van de opleiding van theater- en literatuurwetenschappers aan vele universiteiten.

In het seizoen 2021-2022 ging Milo Rau bij NTGent in première met het stuk Verdriet & Schoonheid, “een universeel verhaal over leven en dood, en hoe het ene op natuurlijke wijze uit het andere voortkomt” (Volkskrant *****). Na de producties Orestes in Mosul in de voormalige hoofdstad van de Islamitische Staat en de Jezus-film The New Gospel in de Zuid-Italiaanse vluchtelingenkampen, reizen Milo Rau en zijn team in 2023 naar het Amazonegebied in Brazilië om hun Trilogie van Oude Mythen af te sluiten met Antigone in de Amazone.

“A SMALL HISTORY OF THEATRE AND A SCHOOL OF LIFE AS CRUEL AS IT IS POETIC.”

With Medea’s Children, Milo Rau takes a new, deep look at the role of children in theatre. A real criminal case is the starting point: the case of a mother who, in total despair after a separation, decides to kill her children and take her own life - but she survives. This modern tragedy is interweaved with the classical tragedy Medea, the most infamous case of relationship conflict and infanticide in Western literature. A group of children take this bloody crime case and the perhaps darkest origin narrative of European culture as an opportunity to reflect on themselves: on family history, first love and first encounters with death, on desires for the future and fears of the end of the world that haunts us all. How does a child deal with the divorce of its parents? With injustice, the breaking of friendships, the pressure at school? How do they deal with the radical power of Medea – with tragedy in general? The children, condemned to silence in the classical tragedies, finally have their say this time around. Medea’s Children: the absurd and blood-drenched tragedies of adult life seen through the eyes of children – a small history of theatre and a school of life as cruel as it is poetic.

About Milo Rau

Milo Rau, born 1977 in Bern, is director, writer, filmmaker and since the 2018/19 season artistic director of NTGent. Rau studied sociology, German and Romance languages and literature in Paris, Berlin and Zurich with Pierre Bourdieu and Tzvetan Todorov, among others. Critics call him the “most influential” (Die Zeit), “most awarded-” (Le Soir), “most interesting” (De Standaard), “most controversial” (La Republica), “most scandalous” (New York Times) or “most ambitious” (The Guardian) artist of our time. Since 2002 he has published over 50 plays, films, books and actions.

Rau's theatre productions have been shown at all major international festivals, including the Berlin Theatertreffen, the Festival d'Avignon, the Venice Biennale, the Vienna FestivalWeeks and the Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts, and have been touring in over 30 countries worldwide.

Rau has received many awards, including the 3sat Prize 2017, the Saarbrücken Poetics Lectureship for Drama 2017 and, as the youngest artist after Frank Castorf and Pina Bausch, the renowned ITI Prize of the World Theatre Day in 2016. In 2017, Milo Rau was voted “Acting Director of the Year" in a survey conducted by Deutsche Bühne, in 2018 he received the European Theatre Prize for his life's work and in 2019 he was the first artist ever to be “Associated Artist" of the "European Association of Theatre and- Performance - EASTAP". In 2019 he received an honorary doctorate from Lund University (Malmö), in 2020 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ghent University.

In 2020 he received the renowned Münster Poetry Lectureship for his complete artistic oeuvre, his plays were voted "Best of the Year” in critics' surveys in over 10 countries. The film version of Orestes in Mosul - followed by a speech by Milo Rau - opened the Dutch Theatre Festival in September 2020, and at the same time the book “Why Theatre?” was published, in which Rau asks 100 leading intellectuals and artists from all over the world to answer this question.

Rau's films (including Die letzten Tage der Ceausescus, Hate Radio, Die Moskauer Prozesse, Das Kongo Tribunal, The New Gospel) have been- awarded many prizes- (including a Special Award at the Festival des Deutschen Films, the Zürcher Filmpreis or the Amnesty International Prize), his film Das Kongo Tribunal was nominated for the German and Swiss Film Awards, among others: “Milo Rau ennobles the cinema”, said the jury of the Zürcher Filmpreis, for example. His latest film, The New Gospel, was awarded Documentary of the Year in Switzerland.

In addition to his work as a director, Rau is also a television critic, lecturer and an extremely prolific writer with 15 publications to date, which have been translated into English, French, Italian, Dutch, Chinese and Norwegian, among others. Rau's literary work has been awarded some of the most prestigious German literary prizes, including the “Oscar of radio drama", the “Radio Drama Prize of the War Blind” (2014) and the two most prestigious German literary prizes for committed literature: the “Peter Weiss Prize” (2017) and the “Gerty Spies Literature Prize” (2020). “Milo Rau is the gold standard of post-drama,” wrote the newspaper “Der Tagesanzeiger” as early as 2014. Rau's work is an integral part of the training of theatre and literature scholars at many universities.

In the season 2021-2022, Milo Rau premiered at NTGent with the play Grief & Beauty, “a universal story about life and death, and how one naturally arises from the other” (Volkskrant *****). After the productions Orestes in Mosul in the former capital of the Islamic State and the Jesus film The New Gospel in the southern Italian refugee camps, Milo Rau and his team travel in 2023 to the Amazon in Brazil to conclude their Trilogy of Ancient Myths with Antigone in the Amazon.

From season 23-24 Milo Rau is the artistic director of the Wiener Festwochen and the artistic programme responsible of NTGent. He will be a house artist in NTGent for the coming years as well.
