In the form of a TED Talk, writer and performer Luanda Casella exposes the different mechanisms of deception.

Short of Lying is a narrative performance about deceit. More specifically, the piece deals with the power of stories to interpret and manipulate reality and shows us how narrative thinking has been appropriated by the communication media.

In the form of a TED Talk, Luanda Casella focuses attention on the art of oratory and exposes the different mechanisms of deception, thus creating a playful tension between deception and awareness. The piece is situated in the discordant world of online publishing, which since the 1990s has appropriated narrative thinking and storytelling to serve neoliberal logic.

The Brazilian writer and performer Luanda Casella has lived and worked in Belgium since 2006. Short of Lying won the Sabam Jongtheaterschrijfprijs pand at the well-know festival Theater Aan Zee (Ostend, BE) in 2018 and was performed for the first time in NTGent in the season 2018-2019. Since then Luanda Casella has been welcomed as a house-director in NTGent and created the well received performances KillJoy Quiz and Ferox Tempus.

About Luanda Casella

Luanda Casella (°1976) is a Brazilian writer and performer trying to rescue the art of storytelling from its mediatized doomed destiny. Her research focuses broadly on the role of literature in the development of critical thinking; the ways in which individuals relate to narratives to create a sense of identity, to form their opinion of the world and ultimately protect themselves. By examining rhetorical concepts through humor, her work exposes language constructions, exploring unreliable narration in fiction and in everyday communicative processes. During the last few years, she has been studying 'the rhetoric of deception', investigating the use of storytelling in communication media, institutions, and politics.

As a writer, Luanda has always been passionate about postmodern literature and all forms of experimental prose where fictional elements are incorporated in narratives with the same relevance as real facts. She calls them ‘radical prose experiments’ that invite audiences to share the process of producing meaning as a political and aesthetic gesture.

In 2018, she was on stage at NTGent with Short of Lying, for which she won the Sabam Jong Theaterschrijfprijs. In Short of Lying, Casella makes use of narrative strategies to mislead the audience, while exposing those very same strategies.

In 2021, Luanda premiered at NTGent with KillJoy Quiz. In this play, she explores the linguistic nature of violence and resistance. The performance takes the form of an 'innocent' television quiz to strike hard at prejudice, deceptive language, sexism and paternalism. In 2022, Ferox Tempus - Terror at its best will follow, a solo performance about carbon-neoliberalism and the end of the world.

Luanda is an educator at LUCA School of Arts and KASK Conservatorium. She’s also been a guest in the following programs: DAS Theatre (Amsterdam), a.pass (Brussels), KABK (The Hague), PARTS (Brussels), amongst others.

Short of Lying is een verhalende performance over bedrog. Meer specifiek gaat het stuk over de kracht van verhalen om de werkelijkheid te kaderen en te manipuleren en toont het hoe het narratief denken door communicatiemedia is gekaapt.

In de vorm van een TED Talk vestigt Luanda Casella de aandacht op de redenaarskunst en legt het de verschillende mechanieken van misleiding bloot om een speelse spanning te creëren tussen bedrog en bewustwording. Het stuk situeert zich in de conflictueuze wereld van online publishing die zich sinds de jaren 1990 het verhalend denken en de storytelling toe-eigende om de neoliberale logica te dienen.

De Braziliaanse schrijfster en performer Luanda Casella woont en werkt sinds 2006 in België. Met Short of Lying won ze in 2018 de Sabam Jongtheaterschrijfprijs op Theater aan Zee en was ze in het seizoen 2018-2019 al te gast bij NTGent. Intussen is Luanda Casella huisregisseur bij NTGent, en creëerde ze hier de fel gesmaakte voorstellingen KillJoy Quiz en Ferox Tempus.

Over Luanda Casella

Luanda Casella (°1976) is een Braziliaanse schrijfster en performer die de kunst van verhalen vertellen tracht te redden uit haar gemediatiseerde, gedoemde lot. Haar onderzoek richt zich op de rol van literatuur in de ontwikkeling van kritisch denken; de manieren waarop individuen zich verhouden tot verhalen om een gevoel van identiteit te creëren, om hun mening over de wereld te vormen en uiteindelijk zichzelf te beschermen. Door retorische concepten te onderzoeken aan de hand van humor, legt haar werk taalconstructies bloot en onderzoekt ze onbetrouwbare vertellingen in fictie en in alledaagse communicatieve processen. De afgelopen jaren heeft ze onderzoek gedaan naar 'de retoriek van misleiding', waarbij ze het gebruik van verhalen in communicatiemedia, instellingen en politiek heeft onderzocht.

Als schrijfster is Luanda altijd gepassioneerd geweest door postmoderne literatuur en alle vormen van experimenteel proza waarin fictieve elementen worden opgenomen in verhalen met dezelfde relevantie als echte feiten. Ze noemt ze 'radicale proza-experimenten' die het publiek uitnodigen om het proces van betekenisproductie te delen als een politiek en esthetisch gebaar.

In 2018 stond Luanda op het podium van NTGent met Short of Lying, waarvoor ze de Sabam Jong Theaterschrijfprijs won. In Short of Lying maakt Casella gebruik van narratieve strategieën om het publiek te misleiden, terwijl ze diezelfde strategieën aan de kaak stelt. 

In 2021 ging Luanda in première bij NTGent met KillJoy Quiz (2021). Daarin verkent ze de linguïstische aard van geweld en verzet. De voorstelling neemt de vorm aan van een 'onschuldige' televisiequiz om hard in te beuken op vooroordelen, bedrieglijk taalgebruik, en seksisme en paternalisme. In 2022 volgt Ferox Tempus - Terror at its best, een solovoorstelling over koolstofneoliberalisme en het einde van de wereld.

Luanda is docent aan LUCA School of Arts en KASK Conservatorium. Ze is ook te gast geweest in de volgende programma's: DAS Theater (Amsterdam), a.pass (Brussel), KABK (Den Haag), PARTS (Brussel), onder anderen.
