Back in 1977, the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people. Around that date, Ghent's cultural scene organises activities and actions to support the suffering people in Palestine. City theatre NTGent joins in with a benefit in the Schouwburg on Ghent's Sint-Baafsplein on Saturday 2 December.

The programme features music and spoken word by artists Eefje de VisserSylvie Kreusch, Serdi, Charlotte Vandermeersch, Yamen Martini and his band Ashtabiez, Flip Kowlier and Binti, Hanin Wishah, Johan Heldenberg, Lara Chedraoui, Lien Wildemeersch, Bani Adam, Arne De Tremerie, Hind Eljadid, Jesse Vandamme,... The band of Senne Guns (known from the tv-show Amaizegwauw) will accompany the musicians. Hamza Abu Ayyash will perform a digital Calligraffiti project live from Jordan and poetry by Fatena Al-Ghorra is read in a Dutch translation by Nisrine Mbarki.

During the benefit, the non-profit design label Disarming Design sells artworks created by Palestinian artists, aiming to raise awareness about the oppression these artists endure.

After the fundraiser, you can visit the NTGent Foyer (first floor) and the NTGent café (ground floor) for snacks and drinks. The Amber Haddad Quintet plays Arabic jazz. In the same Foyer, between 3pm and 8pm and after the benefit, you can join in embroidering the names of Palestinian victims on a big canvas.

All proceeds from ticket sales of the benefit go entirely to Oxfam Belgium's Gaza Emergency Fund. The same applies to the proceeds from the café that evening.
