Under the Influence

In this comic one-man show David Labi explores the story of his late father Marcello, an Italian Jew who survived the Holocauts and later hauled his loved ones on an insane journey through business booms and busts, casinos, shady deals, a bomb attack, and more.
Father Labi's life defies any imagination. He survived Bergen Belse concentration camp, a bomb attack ánd the Yom Kippur war. At the same time, he was self-centred, vane addicted to gambling, and longed for a grand and compelling life. David, on the other hand, is sensitive and thoughtful. He loves books, art and arthouse films. When he is twenty, his father dies. In the following years, David roams the world. Until one night, alone at home in Berlin, he realises that he is much more like his father than he likes.
Now, as David faces his own midlife crisis, he longs to grow up – but his macho dad keeps getting in the way. David takes us on a transformational quest to find his dead father and live on.
Blending clips from Marcello’s Holocaust Survivor testimony with stories from both their lives, this interactive, multi-media show delves into identity, persecution, migration, masculinity, and unresolved parental trauma. It highlights little-known history, including the Holocaust plight of Libyan Jews and the cultural clash of a Sephardi-Ashkenazi marriage.
The performance is about the Holocaust.
