A ceremony and festive waffle bake that welcomes new citizens and brings them together with other residents to celebrate a shared future.

Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert describes their journey towards Belgian citizenship as a marriage in which only one partner was there to say “I do”. The total lack of formal observance, official welcoming or congratulations inspired them to develop a ritual for new Belgians. 

The goal of verBELGingsfeest (BELGificationParty) is to introduce the concept of ‘hospitality’ into the machinery of the state, and thus to reflect on our contemporary citizenship. Because you don’t eat waffles on your own, right?
