A performance that attacks the status quo, questions it, magnifies it, confirms it and breaks it open, in search of room for love.
Scenes is inspired by the text Scenes from a Marriage by the Swedish film maker and writer Ingmar Bergman. The text is an iconic sketch of the white, western nuclear family and the search for connection inside and outside the monogamous marriage.
Through conversations between a married couple, gripped by disillusionment, fear and frustration, Bergman shows the violence of the 'normal'. The couple, man and woman, are bound in inherited gender roles. They try to resist, often at the expense of the other.
Actors Lucie Plasschaert and Joeri Happel were moved by this violent attempt at love. Together with theatre makers Jesse Vandamme and Laurens Aneca, they radically reworked Bergman's text into a series of theatrical sessions of relationship therapy in which two people in their twenties try to find out what will become of them.
Will they become like their parents? Or is there a way to go that goes beyond the norm, a space in which new possibilities are found? Perhaps love is an attempt to resist the power of habit?
