Werktoneel
Lucie Plasschaert, Louise Bergez, Lucas Van der Vegt and Joeri Happel are the actors, Jesse Vandamme is the director, and Chloé Wasselin Dandre is the collective's permanent scenographer and set designer. What connects the members of Werktoneel is, among other things, their unshakeable belief in the power of the collective and of co-authorship. The actors are more than performers. They embody the material and are irreplaceable.
Their darkly humorous graduation project “Giants” was immediately shown at Theater aan Zee in 2021. In 2023, they had their big breakthrough with the NTGent production “Gruis / aan de twijfel” (Gruis / on doubt), based on the oeuvre of Willem Frederik Hermans and voted best performance of the year by De Standaard. “Gruis / aan de twijfel” was also selected for the TheaterFestival as one of the most important performances of 2024 and brought Werktoneel to the Netherlands, where the collective received praise for breathing new life into the work of one of the absolute masters of Dutch literature.
Werktoneel is currently touring Flanders with its follow-up “Aan de start van de brug” (At the start of the bridge) (2024), an exploration of how people deal with their own mortality and the inventive – sometimes absurd – ways they devise to avoid death.

Werktoneel has grasped Hermans by the scruff of the neck brilliantly
