! is a theatre group with five actors and a designer.
! works collectively and divides the artistic responsibilities together with a back office among the different members.
! plays self-written texts based on improvisations, and new plays written for the group.
! exists since 2001, when the group made a performance called "The Magical Brabant Mystery Tour", in cooperation with brass bands and community centres.
! speaks English, German, Italian and most of the time, of course, Dutch (with and without a Flemish accent).
! makes theater about small problems and big politics, about absurd human behavior, about the desire for intensity and about the call of the strange.
! swears by collaborations with other artists, with theaters and festivals, with performers from different disciplines and countries.
! has had Rotterdam (Theater Rotterdam) as a permanent base since 2010, directed the Theaterhaus Jena in Germany from 2018 to 2022 and has several permanent presentation partners in Italy and Belgium.
! made three films: Maybe Sweden (2006), Stop Acting Now (2016) and Urlaub in Deutschland (2021).!
! won the Mary Dresselhuys Prize (2006), the Colombina (2009), the Proscenium Prize (2010), the Total Theatre Award (2014, Edinburgh), the Theo d'Or (2016), the Premio Drammaturgico Nazionale Antonio Conti (2020, Italy), the Martin Linzer Theaterpreis (2022, Germany) and the 3sat-Preis (2024, Germany).
! played at several international festivals, like the Holland Festival in the Netherlands, Theatertreffen in Germany, RomaEuropa Festival, and Triennale di Milano in Italy, the Tangente Festival in Austria, Festival de Curitiba in Brazil, Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the Ruhrfestspiele in Germany, and the Festival Internazionale di Teatro Lugano in Switzerland.
