'Antigone in the Amazon' selected for prestigious Festival d'Avignon

| 10 April 2023
The brand new performance 'Antigone in the Amazon' by Milo Rau & NTGent has been selected for the 77th edition of the Festival d'Avignon. This makes NTGent's fifth consecutive appearance at the prestigious theatre festival.

The Festival d'Avignon is one of the most important performing arts festivals in Europe. In 2018, connoisseur audiences in the southern French city heavily applauded La Reprise, one of Milo Rau's first productions as artistic director at NTGent. Now, six years later, Rau returns there with Antigone in the Amazon.

For Antigone in the Amazon, Milo Rau and his team traveled to the Brazilian state of Pará, where the forests are burning to make way for soya cultivation and where capitalism is devouring nature. On an occupied piece of land, the team - in collaboration with the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra (MST), the world's largest organisation of 'landless' people - creates an allegorical piece about the violent ravages and displacement by the modern state, which considers private property more important than the traditional right to land.

Antigone in the Amazon can be seen a total of eight times at Festival d'Avignon from 16 to 24 July. The world premiere will take place on 13 May 2023 at NTGent.
