In 700 B.C., the Greek poet Hesiod wrote down a series of pieces of advice on farming for his brother. Werken en dagen thus became a poetic farmer’s almanac that combines practical advice with reflections on how to live.
With Werken en dagen, FC Bergman takes this ancient text as a starting point for a contemporary reflection on life on and with the earth. A life shaped by seasons, soil, and community, yet one in which new times inevitably carve their way through old rhythms and certainties.
What begins as an ode to connectedness with nature also becomes a tension between human and landscape, between control and surrender.
Where The Sheep Song explored the malleability of the individual, Werken en dagen focuses on the power of the collective and the inescapable influence of nature, and at the same time becomes a gentle elegy for what is disappearing.
