14.06.25 — 14.06.25As an attempt to compose a love letter to her people and to re-discover her West-African roots, Great Apes of the West Coast is a raw and powerful Afro-futuristic solo performance, that tells the story of the West-African culture through the voice of a woman born and raised there.
It is the tale about bringing the sound, the voices, and the language of a West-African tribe to Western theatres. Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura takes a trip down memory lane to craft a new identity and retell her personal story from a new perspective.
Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura graduated as a performance artist at Toneelacademie Maastricht. In season 2021-2022, she made her debut on the big stage of NTGent as part of the cast of Grief & Beauty, a play by Milo Rau. In 2023, Princess felt ready to start sharing her most personal story, in an attempt to envision a possible future. In 2024, she won a prestigious Theo d'Or award for her groundbreaking performance in this play.
