If even an AI has no hesitation in naming Hamlet as the pinnacle of theatrical history, that perhaps says as much about us as it does about Shakespeare.
In R2D2_or_not_2B2, De Warme Winkel revisits Shakespeare’s classic as a digital and existential reconstruction. The play is not performed, but reconstructed by a dozen robots: from intelligent vacuum cleaners to bionic quadrupeds and androids in crisis.
In a witty yet confrontational adaptation, they attempt to understand the fragments of Hamlet and bring them to life. Whilst re-enacting the iconic characters, they simultaneously reflect on themselves, on theatre and on what it means to be human.
Just as Hamlet found himself at a turning point between eras, so too is the world today in transition.
Between biological and digital logic, between human and machine, the question is raised as to whether even the most canonical play can still speak to a changed reality.
