113 years ago, one ballet shook the foundations of the musical and theatrical worlds: Le Sacre du Printemps. Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe reinterprets this iconic piece and sheds his contemporary light onsacrifice and transformation
In the classic by composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, a young woman was chosen to dance herself to death as a sacrifice for a new spring. As a mirror image of Stravinsky's ritual score, Lander Gyselinck composes and improvises rousing new music on drums and electronics.
On stage, Meirhaeghe shows portraits of three women – performers Sophia Rodriguez, Charly Ange Fogaroli and Courtney May Robertson – who each have to pay a price in their lives in and out of the spotlight. a rite of spring promises not only to be a tribute to a classic, but also a radical account of female sacrifices today. a rite of spring promises not only to be a tribute to a classic, but also a radical account of female sacrifices today.
