Mimi's Shebeen

18.10.25 — 18.10.25

Welcome into the dark corners of a deconstructed shebeen, an unlicenced bar in the South African townships, and welcome to a journey full of life, struggle, perseverance and determination.

Inspired by the South African singer Miriam Makeba’s expulsion from her own country, Seutin taps into the heritage of Makeba’s work as a political activist to tell stories of exile, migration and human rights.

Where do you draw strength to hold your head high when you have been banished from your homeland, separated from your mother, your people and your roots? How do you survive — and even flourish — so far away from everything and everyone you know?

They saw the play and said:

  • The driving and healing force of the performance, however, lies in the music with which Puoane, accompanied by musicians Angelo Moustapha & Zouratié Koné,... . What a rich palette we get to hear, from Makeba's “A piece of ground” and traditional hymns in Xhosa to catchy spoken word, an ode to Congolese singer Jacques Loubelo and even a touch of gospel.
